SIMON OLDFIELD

Cool, calm, collected, elegant, suave and sophisticated…..  that is Simon, the man, nicely summed up. In fact it is more or less Simon, the cricketer summed up.

From the moment he made his debut in 2011, the members of Deddington CC knew they had found something very important – someone who could be trusted to be let loose in polite company and not embarrass himself or the club.

A captain can confidently use Simon anywhere in the order.  With a nice, front foot, straight bat technique he is rarely troubled by anything other than the very best bowlers. With a calm unflappable temperament and the ability to bat long periods of time, he is at his best digging his team mates out of trouble. He has, on more than one occasion, turned a desperate situation into a match winning one, perhaps most memorably when making his top score of 63, away at Charlbury 2nd XI in 2013.

As a bowler he was, for some strange reason, rarely used in his first couple of seasons. It was 2013 before we started to regularly see his off spin being used. With his short run up, classical high arm, side on action, gentle pace and nice loop there is something wonderfully relaxing and old fashioned about him.  He is effective too, taking wickets regularly including a five wicket haul in 2014 against Eynsham 2nd XI.

A top guy to have around. Never has he been heard to say anything unpleasant or negative about anyone. A decent cricketer, committed club man and a true gentleman.
