After the unseasonally good weather over Easter, it was inevitable that the pre-season inter-club warm-up game on April 27th was played in altogether different conditions. Despite this, there was plenty of promise and enthusiasm on show from two evenly-matched sides made up from the women’s and men’s squads. The format was 15 deliveries faced per batsman and a maximum of 4 overs per bowler. Five runs were deducted for each wicket lost. Rob (Deepdale) Preston (he will only bowl down the slope from the ‘Preston’North End) won the toss and put in the side captained by Simon (surly I can’t be aching this much before playing) Oldfield. Solid contributions from a number of players including Georgia Adams (19), newcomer Biswajit Neog (net 15), Joe Roberts and Beth Bottom (both 11) left the side on a gross score of 121 and with five wickets, including two run-outs a net score of 86. The second innings started in light rain to complement the strong winds, but this did not deter Dave Victor who continued where he left off last season, where I think he last game he scored a rapid 83, his highest ever score, but bludgeoning a rapid 36 from his 15 deliveries. Skipper Preston weighed-in with a net 21, falling once, but some good bowling and cavalier batting, restricted the other batsmen to either single, or negative scores. Amazingly, at the end of the inning, the gross total was identical at 121. However, eight wickets had fallen, including three to skipper Oldfield, so the Casuals beat the Unmentionables by 15 runs and everyone took refuge in the Unicorn and then on for a warming curry at the Bengal Spice. Roll-on the new Season. Both the OCA and Women’s Home Counties games start next weekend, May 4-5.
