DCC II vs. Chalgrove, OCA Div 10 Sat 8th Aug 2015
It was a warm and sunny afternoon as we welcomed our visitors from Chalgrove, who were looking to avenge the defeat at the hands of DCC ll earlier in the season. Skipper for the day, Dave Barnhill, lost the toss and had to tell the lads that DCC had been invited to bowl. Undaunted the team took the field with enthusiasm, well the younger players did. The older hands thought it could be a long afternoon in the heat. Jimmy McPhee took the first over from the Hempton Road end and instantly caused problems, bowling full on a good off stump line, with good pace and a bit of away swing. It was skipper Dave who took the first wicket though, courtesy of a smart catch by keeper Alan Collins. Jimmy then well and truly took centre stage taking a wicket in his second over and two more in his third, although the hat trick ball will have disappointed him. Five overs done and Chalgrove were looking like Australia – 7 for 4.
The fifth wicket pair struck a few lusty blows but we were in no mood to allow them to get away from us and the partnership was broken by Dave, courtesy of an outstanding catch by Dan Rawlings. From here on in it was a bit of a procession and the visitors were bundled out for 45. Star performer was Jimmy with 5 for 25, supported by the trundle of Dave Barnhill, 3 for 18 and a Niall Murphy run out.
We batted straightaway, deciding tea could wait until the end of the game. The openers could not have been more contrasting – the experienced and steady Simon Oldfield and the youthful attacking Niall Murphy. This worked well as they added 25 to calm any nerves, before the younger man was dismissed. George Welch joined Simon who moved steadily to 26 before falling with the team 2 short of victory. George was joined by his dad Steve and quickly hit the winning runs. This means George has not been dismissed since 13th June and is averaging 33 this season to date. A tremendous win, based on a great performance by every member if the team, which has moved us up to 3rd in the table.
