It’s a rare event for 9 members of Deddington 2 to suffer second degree sunburn whilst watching their opening pair rack up a 103 partnership. This is what Messrs Welch and Oldfield inflicted on their teammates in the first full game of the season home to Cropedy 4 on a beautiful day in Oxfordshire.
However, Cropedy 4’s bowling seemed to improve as the innings progressed making an acceleration of the run rate difficult. When the partnership was broken some 8 overs remained for the incoming batsmen to push the score to a total that would be comfortable to defend. Despite the efforts of Wayne (7 in 3), Adey (17 in 14) and Bis (14 in 5) the innings finished on 155 for 7 with Cropedy 4’s skipper, Paul Covavic, donated bowling figures of 5 for 34.
A stunning catch by Wayne off the bowling of Jonathan early in Cropedy 4’s reply gave the home side encouragement. His bowling partner, debutant Mo Numaan, also chipped in with an aggressive spell encouraging one of the opening pair to call for a helmet. However, a partnership of 77 between Messrs Beecroft and Clapp then followed leaving the game evenly poised.
Simon “Jug avoidance” Oldfield (top scorer with 48) then came on to add some excitement almost securing a hat-trick in his final over leaving the innings on 93 for 5. It was the last wicket to fall and the final pair, another Beecroft and a young Jake Outfield won the game with an unbeaten partnership of 63.
Thanks must go to Dave Webb for resurrecting his captaincy skills and to two other debutants, our umpire, Derek Boughton and his wife, our new expert scorer. There are reports that the 40 wides bowled in the match have left Derek unable to lower his arms…………
